Mathematics and Physics Workshops
South Africa
In the rural midlands of South Africa, schools are under resourced and ill-equipped to reach their fullest potential in secondary education. This project has been launched in recognition of the need to address poor quality teaching and learning of Mathematics and Physical Science throughout impoverished townships in the area. Using up-to-date technologies and innovative teaching methods, our in-country partners run an academy to upskill teachers in their curriculum delivery, and facilitate workshops to supplement students with extra-curricular tuition.
At present, this work is reaching approximately 500 teachers and 2,500 pupils each year. Since all activities are voluntary, the full rates of attendance evidence the value of the workshops.
Key Areas of Expenditure:
- Training academy for Mathematics teachers with laptop provision for all to keep
- Additional workshops, residential courses, conferences and other support & development activities for Mathematics and Physics teachers
- Advanced software, relevant ICT hardware and other teaching equipment
- Follow-up monitoring
- Annual Careers Day for Grade 12 students and involvement in enrichment activities such as Science Expos, Olympiads and mathematics camp
- Revisions and teaching sessions for students
