Female Empowerment – Gender Based Violence

Having been through three relentless decades of war, Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most dangerous places to be a woman. Unstable and corrupted systems of governance have led to ongoing human rights abuses, high maternal mortality rates and discrimination in education and employment. In many cases this has exacerbated further into domestic violence, trafficking and an overall denial of empowerment.

A sanctuary has been set up to provide traumatised children and women with individualised care through three stages: recovery, transition and reintegration. With the goal of restoring broken lives and ultimately assimilating each client back into their community and family life, a case worker provides support through the following elements:

  • Medical checkups and treatment
  • Counselling
  • Level-appropriate education
  • Vocational training and employment placement
  • Legal aid

Key Areas of Expenditure:

  • Physical and fun recreational activities
  • Literacy classes
  • Life skills training and careers advice
  • Case management costs including investigation and support
  • Advocacy and investigation into public service gaps and cross-border co-ordination
