Primary Education Access

Until recently, the closest primary school available to students in a remote Indonesian village was 5km away across steep and treacherous terrain. Each week the children would make the journey and sleep in makeshift huts every night before returning back to their home village for the weekend. This was a difficult situation for the community who expressed a strong desire to build their very own primary school. As a result, a new school was established in 2012 but demand has surpassed capacity as children overflowed into the teacher’s house. This provided a less than ideal learning environment so the community would now like to proceed with the construction of more permanent classrooms.

Similarly, in another nearby village students walked an hour twice a day to reach the closest primary school. They too voiced their interest in the establishment of a local primary school and have set land aside for this purpose. The government supported a distance education scheme which involved visits by a teacher from the nearest school, yet it was soon realised that there was not sufficient space for this arrangement to succeed. As a result, temporary classrooms have been donated along with assistance in running kindergarten classes until a more permanent fixture is established on the dedicated land.
