Income Generation Programs

As humanitarian crises have lifted in Sri Lanka, national development has shifted its focus toward building a strong economic core in the private sector and diversifying rural livelihoods. Positive demographic transition has accompanied the drive toward middle-income country status but now poses some challenges regarding aged dependency. By 2036, nearly one quarter of the population will be older than 60 years old resulting in an estimated 61 dependents per 100 working-age adults. To offset the financial burden on individuals, it is imperative that the nation acts pre-emptively to foster a cohesive labour force for effective social services.

This project strives to assist impoverished Sri Lankans with income generation opportunities to ensure no group is left behind. It works with tsunami-affected, war-torn and otherwise marginalised communities to provide a platform upon which students, skilled workers and entrepreneurs can spring into productive livelihoods through:

  • School scholarships
  • Vocational training in tailoring, small mechanics and carpentry
  • Micro-enterprise support in dairy production, vegetable gardens and bakeries

Key Areas of Expenditure:

  • Life Skills and vocational training program development and implementation
  • Micro-enterprise support and loans in dairy, chicken, vegetable farming
  • Primary school reroofing
  • Orphanage rain water tank installation
  • Scoping for adult literacy programs, school scholarship schemes, tailoring classes, health education projects.
  • Infrastructure upgrades
