Food and Water Security

The semi-arid climate of Eastern Kenya is a source for much concern over food and water security.  Exacerbated by climate change and land degradation, the loss of arable soil to erosion poses great risk of famine and drought.  Rather than providing shipments of food as a Band-Aid solution, this project aims to build a foundation of resilience to future weather extremes by building sand dams to store water & equipping farmers with advanced agricultural techniques.  Each project activity is designed to be cost-effective and environmentally sensitive whilst drawing on local knowledge and resources for assured long-term sustainability.

Key Areas of Expenditure:

  • Construction of sand dams
  • Water and soil conservation training
  • Livestock management training
  • Tree nurseries
  • Seed banks
  • Crop diversification
