Education and Vocational training

Casteism leaves no respite within Indian spheres of education. The ‘untouchables’ are without rights and frequently subject to abuse and neglect from castes above. Whilst growing international awareness has led to some positive intervention, it is from this group of people that the bulk of India’s unskilled and uneducated still come.

In recognition of the power of education to bridge social chasms, a scholarship scheme has been set up to ensure that disadvantaged children do not fall by the wayside. The project concurrently supports their parents (particularly at-risk widows and single parents) through a range of vocational training opportunities to enable a reliable income. Once secure, they are then able to fund the remainder of their child’s education and the scholarship gets passed on to the next eligible child.

Key Areas of Expenditure:

  • Scholarship funding covering cost of school fees, books, uniforms, transport, equipment and teaching resources
  • Vocational training in embroidery, tailoring, carpentry, welding and computing skills
  • Cashew farming for internal income generation
  • Mentor programs
  • Monitoring and evaluation
