Education and Life Skills

In the Philippines the incidence of poverty is 50% for those who do not complete primary school, and less than 2% for those with a college degree. Within urban poor settlements situations at home are rarely conducive to study due to noisy and crowded spaces, obligation for family responsibilities, lack of affordable tuition, and extensive unhealthy eating habits. It is also vital to ensure children have the full support of their parents to pursue study so that they will not be pulled out of school to supplement household income.

This project overcomes each of these barriers by getting alongside whole families and meeting their individual socioeconomic requirements. Having conducted a community needs’ assessment of local businesses and trade skills absent in the area, parents are trained with life and vocational skills to fill local shortages and earn an income. This way, they are then able to support their child’s education and the standard of living is raised for the entire community.
