Cyclone Winston, Fiji

Cyclone Winston was the strongest recorded cyclone to have ever hit the Fijian archipelago. It caused wide scale loss of homes, infrastructure and crops as 12m high waves battered the coastline and winds gusting at 325km/hour swept the land bare.

A cross-national disaster response team responded within hours of the cries for help to begin the reconnaissance process. Emergency shelter, water and food supplies were delivered immediately to the island of Ba soon to be followed by medical assistance and counselling. Aid workers and various specialists who were involved in the Cyclone Pam (Vanuatu) clean-up are again offering their services to restore communities back to strength.
