Community Empowerment

As humanitarian crises have lifted in Sri Lanka, national development has shifted its focus toward building a strong economic core in the private sector and diversifying rural livelihoods. Demographic transition that has accompanied the drive toward middle-income country status now poses some challenges regarding aged dependency. By 2036, nearly one quarter of the population will be aged above 60 causing an expected 61 dependents per 100 working-age adults. To offset the financial burden on individuals, it is imperative that the nation acts pre-emptively to foster a cohesive labour force for effective social services.

This project strives to assist impoverished Sri Lankans with income generation opportunities to ensure no group is left behind. We work with tsunami-affected, war-torn and marginalised communities to provide a platform upon which students, skilled workers and entrepreneurs can spring into productive livelihoods, through:

  • School scholarships
  • Vocational training in tailoring, small mechanics and carpentry
  • Micro-enterprise support in dairy production, vegetable gardens or bakeries
  • Infrastructure upgrades

Key Areas of Expenditure:

  • Scholarship program
  • Life Skills and vocational training program development and implementation
  • Micro-enterprise support and loans
  • Clean water projects
